Sonamasoori rice can be enjoyed with some sambar (Indian lentil stew), rasam soup, and some vegetable curry or we can make Pongal or some types of kheer. In south Indian, all types of variety rice like lemon rice, tomato rice, cilantro-lime rice are made with sona masuri rice. Some people even use sona masuri rice for biryani too. Nowadays we get royal organic Sona masoori rice from Costco.
Sometimes I buy a bag of royal sonamasoori rice from Costco or a nearby store. Cooking sonamasoori rice instant pot can be done in two methods. One directly inside the inner pot or by pot in pot method. I prefer doing pot in pot method most of the time since I can make three different recipes at the same time. I do direct cooking only when do some instant pot rice recipes like lemon rice, tomato rice, or any variety of rice. Sometimes I get Costco Sona mashuri rice big bags.

What is sona masoori rice?
There are different types of rice in India. This is a medium-grain Indian white rice from south India which is slightly sticky and very light in texture. This rice is naturally aged at least a year. The rice tastes great for making Pongal, lemon rice, tamarind rice even fried rice. This rice comes in both varieties of white rice and brown rice.
Is sona masoori rice healthier than basmati rice?
It’s always debatable on which rice is best like sona masoori vs basmati rice. Sona masoori is not polished, easy to digest, and basmati rice is polished. Basmati falls under low GI whereas masoori rice falls under high GI. Sona masuri rice is also said to be a genetically modified variety (sona + Mahsuri). So any rice is the healthiest rice in moderation.
How to cook sona masoori rice instant pot (pot in pot method)?
Now let us see how to cook sona mahsuri rice.
Take one cup of rice and wash it thrice to remove the excess starch.
Add 2.5 cups of water to the rice.
I always soak the rice for 15 to 30 minutes before cooking.
Turn on the instant pot and add one cup of water to the inner pot. Place the rice bowl inside the pot.
Since this is pot in pot method, I’m adding some dal(lentils) to make sambar. So I’m placing another bowl on top of it with the lentils and water.
Close the lid.
Pressure cook for between 9-10 minutes. Let the pressure release naturally.
How to cook sona masoori rice in pressure cooker?

Take 1 cup of Rice and gently rinse twice.
Combine with 2½ cups of water and let mixture rest for 15 minutes.
Cook for 3 whistles.Let the pressure settle down naturally.
Bring mixture to boil, stir gently and cover with the lid. Cook the rice on a medium flame for 15 minutes or until all the water has been fully absorbed. Remove from heat and serve.
How to cook rice in the microwave?
Take 1 cup of SonaMasoori Rice and wash it a couple of times in the water. This process will remove the excess starch from the rice. Now Combine rice with 2½ cups of water and let the mixture rest for 15 -30 minutes. Cook in a microwave-safe bowl on high for 10 minutes, remove cover and stir. Cover and microwave on defrost for an additional 10 minutes. If rice is too hard in the first cooking, use more water. Use less water if it is too soft. Enjoy the rice in the microwave.
How to cook sona mahsuri rice in an electric cooker?
Take 1 cup of Sona Mahsuri Rice and rinse twice to remove starch. Place rice and water in an electric rice cooker. Close the lid and turn it on and cook. Enjoy the rice with your favourite gravy.
How much water for 2 cups of rice?
The sona masoori rice water ratio depends on the variety. Here are some of the proportions for the varieties I use
Basmati rice -1 cup – 1.25 to 1.5 cups of water
masoori rice – 1 cup – 2.5 to 3 cups of water
sona masoori raw rice – 1 cup – 3 cups of water
How to cook brown sona masoori rice ?
For 1 cup rice use around 2.25 cups of water and 1/2 tsp of oil to cook brown sona masoori rice.

Here is the easy and quickest way to cook sona masoori rice at home.
- 1 cup sona masoori rice
- 2-2.5 cups water
- Take one cup of sona masoori rice and wash it thrice to remove the excess starch.
- Add 2.5 cups of water to the rice.
- I always soak the rice for 15 to 30 minutes before cooking.
- Turn on the instant pot and add one cup of water to the inner pot. Place the rice bowl inside the pot.
- Since this is pot in pot method, I’m adding some dal(lentils) to make sambar. So I’m placing another bowl on top of it with the lentils and water.

Similarly, the water quantity will differ as per the age of the rice and the brand. So try the water quantity as I mentioned above and adjust the water quantity accordingly.
How to store rice without bugs?
If you see some bugs in rice transfer the entire the rice bag into a tray and keep it in direct sunlight for few hours.
